ABOUT

Download our podcast from iTunes to hear the stories of one girl, two more girls, and a pizza place. Or more precisely—a buffet, metaphorically speaking.

Weekly, we discuss peanut dumplings, underground cities, haw fruit and the rest of our dull, day-to-day lives in the center of the world: Beijing.

Ming

The giddy cynic!

From defending the lobsters in Cape Cod to arguing yogurt prices in Beijing, Ming-Qi Chu’s life can be framed by her quest for justice. Or—a search for the best ingredients; the girl’s a savant in the kitchen, chopping scallions with the pizzazz of Sweeney Todd. She gets even more fiery when dealing with the human rights issues of Aids Orphans, Migrant Laborers, and Female Inequality. Onions, however, do not make her cry.

  Ming

The mop-headed darling!

Sarabeth Berman only speaks through interpretive dance, which makes this podcast a particular challenge. (Adriane and Ming translate her swallowtail plies through an elaborate mashup of morse-code and DanceDanceRevolution.) A Boston native, she leaps through the city’s social swirls and can be seen dancing on the arms of Zhang Ziyi and Michael Cera. Her favorite food is water.

  Adriane

The world-weary sleuth!

In December 2007, Adriane Quinlan visited Beijing, never to leave again. She spends her days admiring her image in the reflective pool tiles at Alexander Gym, cycling towards truth, and cutting her own Chinese flash cards. She hails from Washington DC and studies the history of imitation antiques, using China as a base. For leisure, Adriane is a full-time free-lance journalist.
